Contact Tracing Scam Warning!

You’ve probably been hearing a lot about contact tracing. It’s the process of identifying people who have come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, instructing them to quarantine and monitoring their symptoms daily.

The Health District conducts contact trace for many communicable diseases, including COVID19, using our own staff. They work with an infected person to get the names and phone numbers for everyone that infected person came in close contact with while the possibly infectious.  People who had contact with someone infected with COVID-19 usually get a direct phone call from a member of the Westport Weston Health District’s Community Health staff.  Community Health staff who call will not ask for personal information, like a Social Security number, for money, information on your bank account, or credit card number. Anyone who does is a scammer. Hang up!

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning regarding contact tracing scams.  As mentioned in previous posts, health departments across the state are doing contact tracing on individuals infected with COVID-19 and those suspected to have been exposed to the virus.  Contact tracing plays a vital role in helping to stop the spread.  Unfortunately, scammers, pretending to be contact tracers, are taking advantage of the situation.
