Environmental Health Services
The Health District’s Environmental Health Department is responsible for enforcing the Public Health Code of Connecticut and the local Aspetuck Health District Sanitary Code. It does so through the issuance of permits, plan reviews and regular on-site inspections.

Food Service
Food Handler Certification Classes
All Class 2, 3, and 4 establishments are required to have a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM). They must be a full-time employee; on-site during Peak Hours and assigned as the CFPM to only one food establishment. They must have a valid certificate from an approved testing organization.

Restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, bars, schools, private clubs, and temporary food events must obtain a permit and be approved before operation. All are inspected regularly.

Septic Systems
New system installations and repairs to existing systems must be reviewed and approved. Includes soil testing, plan review, and inspection.

Private Wells
Private drinking water wells are regulated to ensure proper location and installation for a safe water supply.
Homeowners with private wells are responsible for the quality of their drinking water. While not required, testing is recommended. Learn more about what to test for and how often to test:

Salons, barber shops, spas, and massage therapy centers must obtain a permit to operate, be inspected and approved before operation. All are inspected regularly.

Public Swimming Pools
AHD permits and inspects public swimming pools. Examples of public pools are swimming facilities located at country clubs, hotels, schools, town recreational areas, camps and condominiums.

Beach Water Monitoring
Water samples are routinely collected from the public bathing areas to assess sanitary water quality. Sampling usually begins after Memorial Day and continues until Labor Day.
