The Start of Summer

This Saturday marks the first official day of summer, many people’s favorite time of the year.  School is out and the days are long.  It’s a great time to be with family and get together with loved ones. Enjoy a relaxing, healthy season and keep these simple tips in mind.

  • Sun Safety! The golden rays of the sun are wonderfully warm but they also can result in skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States.  Take care to protect yourself and your children by regularly applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Swim Safely! Drowning can happen in what seems like an instant and a child can drown in very shallow water so designate a responsible adult to watch children around water at all times. When enjoying boating activities, make sure that each person has a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and that all boating rules are followed.
  • Don’t let Bugs Bug You! Itchy bug bites and ticks can definitely put a damper on the season.  Check yourself, your children, and your pets regularly for ticks after coming in from the outdoors.  Remember that mosquitoes come out to feed during dawn and dusk.  The CDC recommends using an insect repellent containing DEET to effectively repel mosquitoes and other pesky bugs.
  • Stay cool! Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even when you don’t feel thirsty.  Remember that heat and excessive alcohol consumption are not a good combination.  Hot temperatures can intensify the effects of alcohol resulting in dehydration. Skip the sugary drinks and sodas and opt for water to stay cool this season.
  • Fire Safety! Toasting marshmallows over the fire is one of summer’s great pleasures, but be mindful that fire and fireworks account for many emergency room visits each year.  Never let children around any kind of fire without adult supervision and don’t let them light fireworks.  Even sparklers can burn a child.
  • Enjoy Seasonal Fruits & Veggies! Make your plate as colorful as possible this season by loading up on freshly (and locally) harvested fruits and vegetables.
