Fitness Centers on Track for June 20th – Phase 2 Opening Preparations

The State of Connecticut is in the process of drafting sector guidelines for establishments that will be permitted to begin opening on June 20th.  Gyms, Fitness Centers, & Sport Clubs are one of the business categories on track to resume operations in this next phase, provided they are prepared to take the precautions necessary.  It is important to note that while the rules provide a way for these places to operate in as safe a manner as possible, the risks to employees and customers cannot be completely mitigated.

The WWHD will post a link to the sector guidelines as soon as they are released by the State of Connecticut. Guidelines are scheduled to be released this weekend. In the meantime, we’ve noted a few recommendations below so that establishments can begin to prepare.  This is not a comprehensive or final list:

  • Complete the self-certification on the Department of Economic & Community Development website to receive the Reopen CT badge
  • Capacity limit of 50%
  • Strict cleaning and disinfection protocol will be necessary
  • Personal Protection Equipment for employees: All employees will be required to wear a mask or cloth face covering, unless doing so would be contrary to his/her health or safety due to medical condition. Class instructors do not need to wear a mask if they are partaking in physical activity as long as a six-foot distance is maintained.
  • Employee log and staggering shifts and break times to minimize contact; daily health checks for employees
  • Hand sanitizer available at all entrance points and common areas where possible
  • Adjust equipment layout to maintain at least six feet of distance between equipment.
  • Signage that reinforces new policies
  • Closed common areas, break rooms, etc. where employees and patrons may congregate
  • Dumbbells/free weights: Establish and mark “workout zones”; have disinfectant products/wipes available near equipment, machinery, free weights, etc. so that customers can also wipe items down.
  • Ventilation: Increase ventilation and the percentage of outdoor air that circulates into the system if possible.
  • Participation in group classes must be scheduled in advance of arriving; no shared equipment during classes.
  • Customers are required to bring/wear masks or face coverings unless doing so would be contrary to their health or safety due to a medical condition. They do not need to wear one when engaged in physical activity but should as they enter/exit facility and use the restroom.
  • Aquatic exercise classes are permitted at 50% capacity while maintaining social distancing. No sharing of equipment and customers must bring own towels.
  • Locker Rooms: Mark or disable every other or every third locker for non-use to enforce six-foot social distancing requirement. Remove casual seating other than benches by lockers as necessary. Disable steam rooms and saunas. Disable or close off communal style showers except for rinsing before or after any pool activity. Independent showers must be attended and sanitized between each use.
  • Water Fountains: Clients should bring their own water bottles. Fountains should be restricted to water bottle filling stations only.
